Kyoto Fan Painting

The oldest fan in Kyoto is said to have been discovered in the arm of the wood-carved Kannon statue at Toji Temple.
Cultivated over Japan's long history, fans have been used not only to blow, but in rituals and performances, comic storytelling, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, and more. Fans come in many varieties nowadays, but among those, the Kyoto style of fan is used as a symbol of status in noble society, as well as in rituals and for decoration.
Using the best materials, an experienced craftsman carefully produces each fan as a traditional Japanese piece of intimate beauty, working as diligently today as ever.
Create a design using clasps on a solidly colored Kyoto fan, drawing a picture using easy-to-use watercolor tools.
