Wood Block Prints

Wood block prints are created by the work of three craftsmen, a pictorial artist (who draws the picture), a carver (who carves), and a paper-maker (who forms the Japanese washi paper). The ukiyo-e that swept the world in the Edo Period were copied using wood carving technology, and mesmerized many people.
The paper part of the wood block print creation process can be experienced here.
Guests will apply six colors in order onto wood blocks, creating a color wood block print.
We will create two varieties, the Heian Jingu Shrine torii gates and an image of a maiko (geisha in training).
Time and cost
Required time is about one hour.
Guests can take their creations home.
The cost for one guest is 1,890 yen (includes tax).
